Department of Justice and Department of Education rescission of guidance a blow to human rights

Statement by Sexuality Information and Education Council of United States (SIECUS) President & CEO, Chitra Panjabi:

The harmful rescission of guidance issued under the Obama Administration to schools supporting the rights of transgender students announced by the Department of Justice and Department of Education yesterday leaves many young people vulnerable to discrimination, stigma, and violence. Gender equality and equity are fundamental human rights. Fortunately, there are years of established law providing students protection under Title IX and the policies in many states and school districts that have been put in place to support and protect all students. SIECUS stands with transgender students today and in the days to come to help ensure that the existing policies offering protections are enforced and expanded across the country to guarantee the rights of all students.
