Last night, President Trump announced his nomination of D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court of the United States. Kavanaugh’s appointment reflects Trump’s campaign promise to “appoint judges that will be ‘pro-life.’”

Chitra Panjabi, SIECUS President & CEO, released the following statement in response:

“Kavanaugh’s nomination represents an imminent threat to the sexual and reproductive health and rights of people across the country.

Through his previous actions, Kavanaugh has supported allowing employers to deny employee access to contraception in the name of ‘religious freedom’ and has actively worked to block access to safe and legal abortion. Replacing Justice Kennedy with Brett Kavanaugh, a far-right conservative with a record of opposing reproductive health and rights, could decimate Supreme Court precedent for decades to come.

People across the country, and especially our young people, deserve better. They deserve a justice who will make decisions that respect the dignity and humanity of people—not cater to a specific ideology.

When our rights are violated, the Supreme Court serves as a vital, final defender of justice. With Kavanaugh on the bench, we fear that there will be no one to hold the line for the communities that need it most.

We strongly urge the Senate to oppose Kavanaugh’s nomination.”
