SIECUS condemns confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett to Supreme Court

(Washington, DC) — In response to Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation to the Supreme Court of the United States, Christine Soyong Harley, SIECUS’ President & CEO, released the following statement:

“Make no mistake: SIECUS vehemently opposes this shameful and illegitimate confirmation process. We condemn the hypocritical senators who voted to confirm Barrett to the bench even as millions of Americans are casting their votes for the next President–and egregiously–instead of working towards the coronavirus relief package that hundreds of thousands of American families and small businesses desperately need. 

This confirmation raises serious concerns surrounding the future of LGBTQ+ rights, health care, and the right to safe and legal abortion in the U.S. But, regardless of who sits on this bench, we stand resolute in our fight for sexual and reproductive health and rights and in our demand for a Supreme Court that works to protect the constitutional and civil rights of all Americans. 

This confirmation is a travesty for anyone who believes in right and wrong; in the concept of justice. But we hold Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s legacy close as we dissent this decision. We remain fully committed  in upholding and defending every person’s right to American values of liberty, equality, and justice. Because, in the end, this is not Donald Trump’s court. This is not Mitch McConnell’s court. This is the people’s court.”
