Make a Lasting Impact with Your IRA or Retirement Plan
A gift from an individual retirement account (IRA) or another retirement asset can help power the policy and advocacy work for quality sex ed for all today and far into the future. Charitable contributions from an IRA may also provide tax benefits.
Ways to Give Through Your IRA or Retirement Plan
There are several ways to support SIECUS using your retirement assets, depending on your age and financial goals.
If you’re 70½ or older, with a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD, sometimes called an IRA Charitable Rollover), you can give any amount (up to a maximum of $108,000) directly from your IRA each year to a qualified charity such as SIECUS without having those distributions included in your adjusted gross income (AGI).
Note: SIECUS must receive your gift by December 31 for your IRA charitable distribution to qualify for that tax year.
Why Give From Your IRA?
- Satisfy Your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)
- If you’re required to take minimum distributions from your IRA, a QCD counts toward your RMD without increasing your taxable income.
- Enjoy a Tax-Smart Giving Strategy
- You can receive a tax benefit regardless of whether you itemize deductions or take the standard deduction on your income tax return.
- Reduce Your Taxable Income
- Lowering your income may help reduce your Medicare premiums and decrease the portion of your Social Security benefits subject to tax.
To qualify:
- You must be 70½ or older.
- Distributions can only be made from traditional Individual Retirement Accounts or Roth IRAs. Charitable donations from 403(b) plans, 401(k) plans, pension plans, and other retirement plans are ineligible for the tax-free treatment. Distribution must be made directly from the IRA trustee payable to SIECUS or another qualified public charity.
- As of 2025, your total combined charitable IRA rollover contributions are limited to $108,000 per year. (Married couples may be able to contribute up to $216,000 per year.)
- Qualified Charitable Distributions from an IRA must go directly to a public charity that is not a supporting organization. Contributions to donor-advised funds and private foundations generally do not qualify for this special treatment.
- You cannot receive any goods or services in exchange for your Qualified Charitable Distribution.
- You must receive an acknowledgement from SIECUS for each Qualified Charitable Distribution.
If you’re age 59½ or older, you can take a distribution from your IRA without penalty and use it to make a meaningful gift to SIECUS. If you itemize your deductions, your donation may qualify for a charitable income tax deduction, allowing you to support our mission and potentially save on taxes at the same time.
No matter your age, you can name SIECUS as the beneficiary of all or a portion of your unused retirement assets, such as your IRA, 401(k), 403(b), pension, or other tax-deferred plan, and the gift will pass to us tax-free after your lifetime.
By naming SIECUS as the beneficiary of your retirement account, you can make a meaningful gift without affecting your current income. Retirement assets often face income taxes for heirs, but when directed to a charitable organization like SIECUS, your gift can have maximum impact while minimizing tax liability.
