In response to Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court of the United States, Samantha Dercher, SIECUS Federal Policy Director, issued the following statement:

“We are as heartbroken as we are enraged by the fact that Brett Kavanaugh has been confirmed for a lifetime position as a Supreme Court justice.

Kavanaugh’s known record indicates a clear threat to the sexual health and rights of all people in this country. From the right to safe and legal abortion, to contraception access, to LGTBQ rights, to immigrant rights, and beyond, Kavanaugh’s appointment jeopardizes far too many hard-won rights for far too many folks in this country.

Beyond his judicial record, Brett Kavanaugh has been credibly accused of sexually assaulting multiple women. Through his reactions to Dr. Christine Blasey Ford’s candid, credible, and devastating testimony, Kavanaugh proved that he completely lacks the temperament and nonpartisanship expected of a judge in any courtroom—let along the highest one in the nation.

Despite all that has come to light surrounding Brett Kavanaugh, the Senate completely ignored his many disqualifying attributes. Throughout this process, they dismissed the voices of women—and the voices of survivors. In short, the Senate failed the country by not conducting a full, transparent, and thorough vetting of a candidate for the U.S. Supreme Court.

To the members of Congress and this administration who failed to prioritize the health of the nation and legitimacy of our highest court, we echo our fellow protesters across the country in yelling, ‘Shame!’”
