(Washington, DC) — Over the past few days, state legislatures across the country–including Alabama, Georgia, and Missouri–have passed a flurry of measures intended to effectively ban abortions. Christine Soyong Harley, SIECUS’ President and CEO, released the following statement in response:

“It is clear that anti-abortion politicians have been emboldened to believe that this is their moment to strip away reproductive freedom and unleash an assault on abortion access in the U.S. This horrific effort to control people’s bodies and decisions is dangerous and unconstitutional, and it will not stand. These terrifying attacks will also result in the prosecution of those seeking abortion care services and the doctors providing them. Meanwhile, the evidence is clear: Restrictive laws do not cause a decrease in abortions. Instead, they cause an increase in harm and force people to seek out dangerous, underground alternatives.

At SIECUS, we are committed to advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights for all people–and especially young people. We know that access to comprehensive information, education, and sexual and reproductive health services is vital for people to ensure their own health and well-being. That very much includes access to safe and legal abortion. Despite these attacks, abortion is still legal in all 50 states. And we will keep fighting–alongside our partners, our champions, and the 7 in 10 Americans who support this constitutional right–to keep it that way.”
