NEW SIECUS State Profiles: A Portrait of Sexuality Education in the States
FY 2015 edition depicts a continued gradual departure from abstinence-only programs.

Washington, D.C. – SIECUS is pleased to publish the Fiscal Year (FY) 2015 edition of SIECUS State Profiles: A Portrait of Sexuality Education in the States. Since the publication of the first SIECUS State Profiles in 2003, this resource has remained the premier tool for advocacy efforts to advance comprehensive sexuality education.

This most recent edition of the SIECUS State Profiles illustrates the progress advocates and educators have made in improving sexuality education law, policy, and implementation. Unfortunately, the profiles also reflect that funds are still being wasted on stigmatizing and shaming abstinence-only-until-marriage (AOUM) programs that our nation’s youth are being subjected to in schools and communities across the country.

“While we continue to see progress in moving away from the failed experiment of abstinence-only programs toward evidence-informed and medically accurate sexual health programs, our work is far from over,” said Chitra Panjabi, President and CEO.

“There is still no dedicated federal funding stream for comprehensive sexuality education programs, and yet another $55 million was added to the $1.87 billion spent since 1982 to intentionally withhold sexual health information in abstinence-only programs.”

The SIECUS State Profiles comprises individual profiles for all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the outer United States territories. It provides information about current laws and policies related to sexuality education; adolescent sexual health data; a federal funding overview highlighting the year’s trends at the federal and state levels, including a historical summary of federal funding for programs for adolescents related to their sexual health and AOUM programs; a table of state’s laws related to sexuality education; and description summaries of the curricula or programs being used across the country.
